5 Key concepts for wabi-sabi inspired interior design

As you may already know, wabi-sabi is an aesthetic philosophy, not a design style. Here are some key wabi-sabi concepts you need to know in order to design your house and rooms wabi-sabi style. You can used them to 1) select materials, 2) design the framework, and 3) choose furniture and other items.

Old, shabby, decaying

The “sabi” of “wabi-sabi” has a meaning of getting old, depreciate or decay. So wabi-sabi is in part literally about finding beauty in things that past their prime. For interior design, you can incorporate antique, vintage, used or old elements. You may want to check 茶道 (sado, traditional Japanese tea ceremony) for inspiration because sado appreciated old/antique items from kake-jiku (hanging scroll of calligraphy or ink painting), tea bowl to flower vase.
