Best gluten-free pancakes and waffles in Northern California

I was forced to go gluten-free because I became allergic to gluten. It’s been a while since I have eaten high-gluten food, but I miss airy but satisfactory chewy breads, crunch pizza crusts, moist but spongy cakes, and so forth.

Thankfully, the world of gluten-free cooking is rapidly evolving. There are restaurants, cafes and bakeries that serve really good gluten-free plates today. But not all areas are like that.

When you find one on a trip, you will need to take the opportunity. Here are some great pancakes and waffles in Northern California.

Wheat-free savory pancake, $14.5

For those who are strictly looking for gluten-free, the pancakes at The Farm Bakery is “wheat-free.” It means that they are gluten free but made in a kitchen that also makes dishes that use flour.

This pancake might have been the best pancake I have ever had in my entire life, including regular pancakes made of flour. It was just fluffy, moist and flavorful. It didn’t have that texture/smell that you sometimes find in gluten-free flour alternatives.

Other plates were also delicious! French toast, $13.5 (with extra strawberries)

If the pancakes from The Farm is smooth, the waffles served by “hidden kitchen” is rustic in a refined way. Made of blue corn, it has unique not-so-smooth texture and a hint of bitterness and nuttiness. It’s very good especially if you are used to heirloom kind of food.
